Palestinians Try a Less Violent Path to Resistance

Palestinians Try a Less Violent Path to Resistance

  1. One word for this article: WOW! It's really refreshing to see a non-violent resistance movement sponsored by the Palestinian government. It seems that, under Prime Minister Fayyad, the government is sickened by the lack of progress Hamas is making through their violent resistance. According to a poll by the Palestinian Center for Policy and Survey Research, 47% of people surveyed still support the armed resistance however. Maybe it's too early to tell the effects of Fayyad's peaceful resistance movement, yet I believe there's a lot of potential here. This attempt at creating a functioning, independent Palestinian state, despite the Israeli occupation, will probably attract international support. Now, global leaders can see Palestine's desire to be free of Israeli control through peaceful means. This is also a very empowering plan for the Palestinians. Through their own work, the Palestinians are cleaning their natural environments, fixing their sewage, holding weekly protests in Bilin, and making strides towards a better state. I predict (and hope) this plan initiates a widespread peaceful resistance not dependent on international support, but that will yield global support so to lessen Israel occupation and Palestinian oppression.

The only problem within Palestine: Hamas' violent resistance movement that can counteract all the peaceful initiatives Fayyad is leading.

  2. I agree Anna this is a very uplifting article and it really sheds light that not everyone in Palestine believes in the Hamas movement. What is even more impressive is that the Palestine people are very well educated. The poll in 2004 tells that 92% of their women are in college. (Understanding the Contemporary Middle East, Jillian Schwedler). Furthermore it is difficult for them to get jobs in Israel. Them using their own resources i.s. their smarts is how they will be able to build their nation. In addition education teaches one how to get what they want without violence. I am arguing that the Palestine people are educated and that they don't need to behave like savages and they don't need the Hamas to further tarnish their image. What they do need, and it looks as if they are getting it from Ghandi's and Martin Luther King's grandsons, are respectable people in power who stand as a symbol for peace, hope, prosperity, leadership, and global appreciation.
