A large Pashtun tribe in a Taliban stronghold agreed to battle insurgents, and in exchange, the U.S. said it would channel $1 million to development projects.

  1. This article provokes many thoughts. First of all I think that is great that the U.S. government is aiding the Shinwaris in defending themselves against the Talibans, but I am disturbed at the idea that $1 million can be used to create a program that will permit smuggling to occur. I look at the impoverished neighborhoods in the U.S. and the only program that they have is the welfare, which is not really a safe program for a coountry who is trying to rise out of poverty. The more needy you are the more benefits you are provided with. Welfare programs make it way to easy for people to create more children and revel in poverty. That $1 million could have been used in America to introduce counceling and job programs for many impoverished citizens who need help with fighting against drug abuse and who may be illiterate. Before America fix anybody elses problem they need to fix there own. There are tons of gangs in America and I don't see any programs being funded or developed to assuage their tensions.
